Can philosophy help us overcome the climate crisis? Yes. And a lecturer at the University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszow will have a share in this. This year, she was the only scientist from the Podkarpackie region to receive a scholarship from the Fulbright Commission
Dr Magdalena Holy-Luczaj has been dealing with environmental ethics for years, which is the philosophical foundation for pro-ecological activities. This area also concerns her latest project, which has gained the recognition of the Fullbright Commission and will allow the scientist to study for 9 months at the University of Georgia in the USA, one of the world’s foremost centres dealing with environmental philosophy.
„In my research, I want to show that changing the perception of functional things, including those of everyday use, from what mainly harms nature, to what is worth our care and attachment, can limit excessive consumption and thus have long-term positive ecological effects „- says Dr Magdalena Holy-Luczaj.
Magdalena Holy-Luczaj has graduated from Jagiellonian University. In 2016, she defended her doctoral thesis in the sphere of Philosophy. Her research interests include modern philosophy, in particular anthropological, ethical and eco-philosophical issues as well as media and political discourse.
The Fulbright Program is the largest scientific and cultural exchange program in the United States. For over 70 years, this program has been supporting cooperation for the development of science, culture, interpersonal and interinstitutional relations between the United States and over 160 countries. The Fulbright program has two dimensions: the first, purely practical, it finances scientific trips of Polish students, researchers and academic teachers to the USA and supports their promising projects. Second: ideological, it tries to strengthen the belief that the exchange of knowledge and skills serves an even greater purpose than the development of science.
