As the first group of graduates of Nursing at UITM considering different  career paths, we are looking a the Surgical Nursing as a specialization in high demand.

Operating room nurses care for patients in all phases of surgery, working as part of a skilled surgical team to improve or save a patient’s life. As the volume of surgeries grow, operating room nurses (also called perioperative or surgical nurses) can find permanent employment in many hospitals or even travel operating room nurse.

In June, UITM  students of Nursing will be celebrating the completion of their 3 years hard work towards the diploma.

Urszula Kąkol, the Nursing studies coordinator at UITM has no doubt that the graduates have an exciting career to look forward to.“Our graduates are well prepared to work in many different departments, including hospitals, nursing homes, hospices and clinics. I am sure that they will pass their final exams with flying colours and I have no doubt that they will quickly find a job as a nurse or carry on with their education into the master degree”

Some graduates of Nursing are already thinking of specialising in the field of surgical nursing.

Operating room nurses have a responsibility to stay up-to-date with advancements in their field, expand their knowledge and broaden their range of activities to better meet the demands of their job. In addition to preparing instruments, a modern operating room nurse is expected to actively participate in medical procedures and provide care for patients during the perioperative period. Although there may be some variation in the specific duties assigned to operating room nurses, their ultimate responsibility remains the same: ensuring the safety of their patients.

UITM offers a bachelor’s degree in Nursing in English and Polish Language. Currently there nearly 300 people studying Nursing from many countries like Zimbabwe, India, South Africa, Nigeria, Rwanda and Poland. Some of them are considering further education in the field of Nursing with surgical nursing in mind.

Operating nurses working in modern medical facilities interact with advanced electrosurgical devices, staplers, laparoscopic and arthroscopic columns, lasers, and equipment drives that have various technical and medical solutions. By incorporating hybrid rooms with simultaneous imaging capabilities, an integrated system that manages the operating room environment and controls medical equipment can be achieved. This system collects signals from devices, cameras, and audio systems. These advancements have led to the development of modern operating rooms where nurses play a critical role in providing care.

The job of an operating nurse remains demanding despite technological advancements. It involves long hours of standing, often with minimal breaks, carrying heavy equipment, and exposure to biological, chemical, and physical factors. Furthermore, there’s time pressure, even during scheduled surgeries. They work in teams of two – one nurse provides instruments for the procedure while the other assists the surgeon. The roles differ while performing professional duties.

Recruitment for Nursing studies is now open at UITM for the October intake.
