„Whose Planetary Consciousness?” – prof. Sunil Amrith, Yale University, USA
May 14, 2025 (Monday), 12:00 p.m. – Main Lecture Hall at UITM, Rzeszów
This lecture traces the beginnings of one of the trends of „planetary consciousness” in the early 20th century and asks the question to what extent this way of perceiving life on Earth is still marked by imperial roots. Based on Indian debates from the last quarter of the 20th century, the speaker asks: does planetary consciousness stand in the way of earthly justice?
Sunil Amrith is the director of the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale, the Renu and Anand Dhawan Professor of History at Yale University, and a professor at the Yale School of the Environment. He is the chair of the Southeast Asian Studies Council at the MacMillan Center at Yale, and the author of 5 books, including The Burning Earth (W.W. Norton and Allen Lane, 2024), translated into 9 languages and selected as a “book of the year” by The New Yorker and The New Statesman in 2024. He was a MacArthur Fellow in 2017, and was awarded the Heineken Prize in History in 2022 and the Fukuoka Academic Prize in 2024.
