Is it possible to travel to the other side of the world, discover a new language and learn about different traditions and lifestyles — all in just 45 minutes? Yes – if you’re taking part in the Cultural Adaptation workshops by the University of Information Technology and Management (UITM)!

In March and April 2025, a series of unforgettable sessions were held at Zespół Szkół nr 3 in Rzeszów. Students from our university – Isaac Mhaka, Nashe Mukechi (Social Work) and Brendan Gobru (Computer Science) – visited classes specializing in advertising, port and terminal operations and analytical technology to share stories about their home country: Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Through Students’ Eyes: Languages, Rhythms and Daily Life

During the sessions, students explored Zimbabwe’s multicultural identity – a country with 16 official languages, rich musical traditions, and incredibly diverse landscapes. The UITM students spoke about daily life, family customs, food (including fun facts about sadza, the national cornmeal dish), celebrations, dances, and social relationships. Everything was presented in an interactive, engaging, and humorous way.

High school students were actively involved – they didn’t just listen but asked questions, discussed, and shared their knowledge of Polish history and culture. They spoke about national symbols, independence, Polish music and language. The result was a genuine intercultural dialogue – equal, authentic and full of mutual curiosity.

“Cultural Adaptation is not just about meeting another culture –it’s an opportunity to develop empathy, openness and real-life communication in English. These encounters break stereotypes, foster mutual respect, and show that diversity can be truly inspiring,” said Dr Paula Wieczorek.

Learning Through Experience: English in Real Use

The meeting was held in English, which helped participants overcome language barriers and develop their communication skills naturally. This form of learning – through direct interaction with someone from another country – proved far more effective than traditional classroom lessons. Students practiced speaking, listening, and comprehension, while also expanding their cultural awareness.

What stood out was the openness and enthusiasm of the students, who eagerly approached the guest speakers, chatted with them, and took photos together – proving that young people are curious about the world when simply given the chance.

About the Cultural Adaptation Project

The Cultural Adaptation project is an initiative by UITM that aims to:

● build intercultural awareness ● strengthen language skills

● break down stereotypes and prejudice ● inspire openness and cooperation among young people

The sessions feature students from countries such as Zimbabwe, Rwanda, India and Iran, who visit regional high schools to talk about their homelands. Each meeting includes a presentation and a Q&A session and lasts 45 minutes. Learn more about the project: https://wsiz.edu.pl/dla-otoczenia/adaptacja-kulturowa/
