13 October 2025 (Monday), 16:00 – online meeting
“Ethics of Emerging Technologies” – Dr. Evie Kendal, Department of Biomedical, Health and Exercise Sciences, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia

/

The introduction of new technologies involves numerous practical and ethical challenges. Traditional methods for assessing key ethical aspects, such as the principles-based model by Beauchamp and Childress (2001), are often inadequate for this purpose: after all, how can one express autonomous, informed consent for the use of new technologies whose effects are unknown? How can a cost–benefit analysis be conducted in cases where there is a high degree of scientific uncertainty regarding the severity and probability of various types of risk, and potential benefits have not yet been demonstrated? It is, however, essential to promote reflection on the ethical, legal, and social implications of emerging technologies in order to avoid introducing them into what some commentators describe as a moral, political, or legal vacuum.

Those interested in participating in the lecture are asked to register their interest using the registration form.

Dr. Evie Kendal is a bioethicist and public health researcher at the Department of Biomedical, Health and Exercise Sciences, Swinburne University of Technology. Her research interests include ethical dilemmas related to new biotechnologies, space ethics, and public health ethics. Evie leads the research group on Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications of Emerging Technologies (ELSIET) at the Iverson Institute for Health Innovation Research, a registered unit of the International Chair of Bioethics.
