Celebrating Diversity at UITM during International Day

Traditional costumes, regional dances, and songs from across the globe filled the stage at this year’s International Day – an event celebrating the vibrant international student community at UITM in Rzeszów.

Nearly 350 students took part, representing not only Poland but also countries like India, Ukraine, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Georgia, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkey.

The event drew a large crowd – students, staff, partners of the university, and invited guests – all eager to experience performances from 10 different countries, including singing, dancing, and colorful displays of national attire during International Day.

4th Edition of International Day

“It’s hard to believe this is already the fourth edition of the event,” said Magdalena Louis, Director of International Cooperation and Recruitment at UITM. “It all started as African Day, and it just grew into what we now call International Day. What makes this event so special is how students from all over the world come together in music, dance, and culture. Even during rehearsals, you can feel the spirit of unity and friendship. Students love events that involve food, music, and dancing – it’s how people really connect.”

UITM is proud to be a regional leader when it comes to student internationalization, standing out even among other universities in Poland.

Dr. Barbara Przywara, Vice-Rector for Teaching, emphasized the deeper meaning of the event:
“One of the things that makes our university unique is its international spirit – openness, tolerance, and integration of different cultures and languages. International Day is a reflection of everything we work on throughout the year. It’s like our own version of student holidays, a joyful time to celebrate after the stress of exams and studies. It’s a chance to connect, share talents, and enjoy being part of a global student community.”

On Stage: Talent and Connection

Seventeen performances from countries including Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Tajikistan, Georgia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Belarus, Pamir, and India lit up the stage in Kielnarowa.

One standout moment came from Mashhura Abdolova (Tajikistan) and Ana Gigiashvili (Georgia), who joined forces to perform a traditional Pamiri dance.
“I’m the only Georgian student at UITM,” said Ana. “When I heard someone was looking for a dance partner, I jumped at the chance. I’m so happy I wasn’t afraid to try something new. Pamiri dance is actually quite similar to Georgian dances. It was an amazing experience!”

And the Winners Are…

Thunderous applause crowned the Zim Dance Group from Zimbabwe as this year’s winners! The team –
Nashe Mukechi (leader), Mitshel Mahachi, Charleen Tsikwa, Leane Mushangwe, Mass Blessed Chiweshe, Michelle Hove, and Sheridan Sipani – stole the show with their energy and joy.

“I’m thrilled we won, but what meant even more to me was the atmosphere,” said Nashe. “The cheers, the smiles, the happiness – I felt so alive. Dance has been part of my life since I was a child. I’ve competed in many events, even back in Zimbabwe. Here in Poland – especially in Rzeszów – life moves at a comfortable pace, and I’ve made so many new friends.”

Nashe dreams of opening his own dance school one day:
“I want to teach kids and adults, help people through dance. I love both Poland and Zimbabwe, and I hope to connect these two parts of my life.”

Behind the Scenes

Preparation for International Day kicked off in mid-April. As always, the team at the International Student Support Office had their hands full.
“Students find their way to us in all kinds of ways – sometimes they come on their own, sometimes we give a little nudge,” said Dominika Cichocka. “But most of them are excited to show off their culture. They do it with so much pride and passion. It’s beautiful to see our students feel comfortable enough here to truly express who they are.”

Dominika adds:
“We want International Day to be more than just a colorful event – it should be a space for celebration, connection, and showing that despite our differences, we’re one strong community.”
