UITM researchers at conference in Porto.
Last Saturday three researchers from the University of Information Technology and Management: prof. Agata Jurkowska-Gomułka, dr Sylwia K. Mazur and Łukasz Cywiński participated in the seminar titled „Gig workers, the national status quo in Portugal and Poland and the current EU legislation” which took place in Porto and inaugurated project “Semi-workers and semi-competitors? The interplay of competition and labour law in times of <platformisation>”. UITM’s project partner is Porto Faculty of Law of Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
The project aims to study the protection granted to digital platform workers as a point of intersection between Competition Law and Labour Law. To this effect, it has three main goals. Firstly, it aims to analyse and compare the different forms of protection granted to these workers and the framework they are given by each legal system. Secondly, it intends to assess the impact of the undergoing changes in labour relationships between platforms and their services providers (workers), taking into account the application of labour and competition laws. To this end, research will cover the national case-law, the decisions of administrative bodies, as well as the law-making process pertinent to this issue. Lastly, the question on possibility of devising a uniform response to these new forms of work at the European Union level will be asked.
The next phase of the project will be a seminar organized by UITM with the participation of Portuguese young researchers. Seminar will be divided int two parts. The first will focus on a research issues; the second will be dedicated to tools available to your young researchers. Event will be open to researchers representing different universities, think tanks and research centers. Next year UITM will organize seminar dedicated to regulation trend on national level, with a special attention given to the notion of hiring during “platformization” era. It will be organized in cooperation with the Institute of Law Studies of Polish Academy of Science.
Project “Semi-workers and semi-competitors? The interplay of competition and labour law in times of <platformisation>” involves both young professors who recently concluded their Ph.Ds, already with an excellent academic record in this area and extensive practical experience in the field, as well as a significant number of doctoral students who have been developing intensive research in this domain. Project is coordinated by prof. Agata Jurkowska-Gomułka, UITM Vice-Rector for Research and International Cooperation. Her Portuguese counterparts are prof. Sofia O. Paisa and dr Ana Teresa da Silva Ferreira Ribeiro.
