67 UITM students compete in Europe’s largest hackathon, showcasing their talent and creativity. Among the participants, a standout team called „MYWIG” secured a spot in the finals, demonstrating their remarkable skills and potential in the hackathon competition.

Creating an innovative search engine concept that will allow users to easily and accurately find a school, educational institution, or field of study that best suits their individual needs; a technological solution that unites communities, protects wildlife, and ensures the safety of people and animals, or the development of a mobile application that will help drivers navigate road works and construction sites in the city – are examples of the tasks of the participants.

This hackathon featured over 300 teams, but it was the “MYWIG” team comprising Igor Markiv, a Computer Science and Econometrics graduate; Maria Siamenchyk, a student of Computer Graphics and Multimedia Production; and Yaroslav Oleshkevych, a graduate of Logistics currently interning at the Department of Logistics and Process Engineering at UITM, who stood out and was qualified for the finals.

The task involved designing a Financzeska ChatBot based on Artificial Intelligence following the organizers’ specified principles. This ChatBot, implemented as a web application, serves as an interactive platform for user engagement in their preferred language. Through conversation, users can access relevant information, making the ChatBot a digital consultant that offers insights and answers. The ChatBot was available through the LLaMa 2.0 SI model-based website and utilizes Artificial Intelligence, trained on openly available data from websites, including the Ministry of Finance, says Yaroslav Oleshkevych.

Another notable contender, the „Friday_After_Deploy” team, took on the GWIZD challenge, focusing on creating an application to alert city residents about the presence of wild animals in their vicinity. Konrad Jakilaszek, Sebastian Pociask, Patryk Hachamowski, Mikołaj Lemański, and Andrzej Gębus spearheaded this project, utilizing a tech stack that included C# ASP.NET Core Web API for the backend, ReactJS for the frontend, and MS SQL for the database. The primary function of the application is to quickly report a found or missing animal in just a few simple steps. Users can easily upload a photo, and provide their name and phone number. Notably, our application offers the capability to pinpoint the exact location, serving as both a means to alert others in advance of encountering a wild animal and as a tool to promptly inform the relevant authorities about such occurrences – explained Konrad Jakilaszek, programmer at UITM.

HackYeah 2023 gathered a diverse pool of participants, ranging from novices to seasoned hackathon veterans. For most UITM students, this marked their first foray into such a competitive event, making their journey to the finals all the more impressive – says Agnieszka Cieśla, Head of the UITM Career Service.

The competition was fierce, with prizes exceeding PLN 520,000. Beyond the awards, the event provided opportunities for participants to seek guidance from industry mentors, connect with tech companies, and nurture their entrepreneurial ideas.
